Reiki and the Healing Reaction

Writer: Claire BellClaire Bell

Reiki (pronounced RAY KEY) translates to mean Universal Life Force Energy or Spiritual Energy. Reiki is a complementary therapy that promotes balance in the mind, body and spirit.

Reiki is a form of energy healing. All forms of energy healing tap into the same source. This source of energy can be called Reiki, Prana, Chi, Life Force, Divine Intelligence, God, Goddess etc.

Reiki is love. We all have the ability to heal ourselves. Reiki practitioners facilitate healing for others by acting as an anchor for the universal energy to remove energetic stagnation within the body, bringing the body back to a state of balance.

What is a Healing Reaction?

It's quite normal to feel tired and emotional after a Reiki session. It's also normal to feel refreshed, calm and better than before the Reiki session. Something that is a little more rare is a "healing reaction". This can include the feelings of being tired and emotional, but it can also include headaches and nausea. This can indicate that the body is detoxifying in preparation for healing, which is what can lead to these symptoms. The symptoms associated with a healing reaction usually resolve within a few days.

There is nothing wrong if this does occur. It can indicate that more Reiki is needed, that the person is experiencing a chronic illness or hasn't received any form of energy healing work before. It is important to note that the healing reaction is not "caused" by Reiki, but brings awareness and healing to imbalances that are already present in the body.

What to do if you experience a Healing Reaction?

After any Reiki session, it is important to drink plenty of water, rest if needed and be gentle and kind to yourself. It is important to honour your body and spirit by listening to its little"nudges", and taking action on how you feel. For example - rest if you're tired.

I encourage all my Reiki clients to ground to the earth. This involves having direct contact with the surface of the earth eg. bare feet on the grass. Grounding can have positive effects on health, mood and well-being.

If you continue to experience the symptoms or they worsen, it's important to go to your regular healthcare practitioner. Reiki is a complementary modality and is not a replacement for medical or psychological care.

Me, surrounded by nature - my happy place!
