What to expect during a Reiki session

What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced RAY KEY) translates to mean Universal Life Force Energy or Spiritual Energy. Reiki is a complementary therapy that promotes balance in the mind, body and spirit.

Reiki is a form of energy healing. All forms of energy healing tap into the same source. This source of energy can be called Reiki, Prana, Chi, Life Force, Divine Intelligence, God, Goddess etc.

Reiki is love. We all have the ability to heal ourselves. Reiki practitioners facilitate healing for others by acting as an anchor for the universal energy to remove energetic stagnation within the body, bringing the body back to a state of balance.

What is a Reiki Healer?

Reiki healers go through specific training to have the ability to provide Reiki to recipients. The different levels are Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. Some lineages also include Level 3A which is a "stepping stone" between Level 2 and Level 3. I personally have been trained to Level 3A.

How long does a Reiki session last?

The sessions that I provide have an appointment time of 75 minutes. Sixty minutes of this time is the Reiki healing and the remaining 15 minutes give us time to discuss what may have come up during the treatment. It can take some time to "come back to the room" as it can be quite relaxing to receive a Reiki healing, so I like to allow time for this.

What do I wear to a Reiki session?

You will be fully clothed while receiving the Reiki, unlike with massage treatments, so I suggest you wear something that is comfortable to lie down in.

What if I can't lie down?

If you cannot lie down on a massage table, or it isn't comfortable for you, then we can have you seated instead. We can discuss what will be most comfortable for you before your treatment.

Will the practitioner's hands touch me during the session?

The lineage of Reiki that I was trained in is hands-on Reiki, which is a gentle touch on certain parts of the body including your head, heart space, torso, hips, knees, ankles and feet. If you would prefer to not be touched during the session I can hold my hand's several inches away from your body instead. I will go through the hand positions with you before we begin your first session to determine if you are comfortable with hands-on treatment or not.

What does Reiki feel like?

Reiki can feel very relaxing, some people feel warmth or coolness coming from the practitioner's hands. Other sensations can be tingling, feeling energy or nothing at all. Some people become so relaxed and calm that they fall asleep - this is all perfectly ok, and you will still experience the benefits of Reiki whether you are awake or asleep.

What should I do after my session?

After your session, it is important to stay hydrated by drinking water. Ensure that you are feeling grounded and fully awake before driving. You may also like to set some time aside after the session to reflect on your experience as some people feel clarity and experience insights after a Reiki session. It's important to be gentle with yourself after a Reiki and it can be normal to experience more tiredness the evening after a Reiki, as it has helped you enter a state of relaxation.
